NYC resistor: DebCamp Party, this Friday (tomorrow)

Tomorrow, Friday July 30, NYC Resistor [0], a local hacker collective, is graciously hosting a party for DebCamp attendees.

There will be a keg of delicious local beer [1] (for a modest charge of ~$3 per cup), but feel free to bring whatever you want to drink as well. Festivities will begin after 7pm.

Debian Day is the time when the Debian Developer community opens up to everyone to come and learn and ask questions about Debian and Free Software. There will be talks, demos, hacking, and conversation. Debian Day will take place from 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM on Sunday, August 1, 2010 at Columbia University, New York City, New York.

- you can meet Debian Developers from around the world

- New York City Councilwoman Gale Brewer will be talking about how government can foster freedom in technology

- Free Software Foundation’s (FSF) John Sullivan will talk about the FSF’s campaigns for freedom

- numerous people will talk about supporting Debian and Free Software for friends and family, in design, at large universities, in government and for shy people

- the Debian Project Leader Stefano Zacchiroli and others will talk about how to get involved in Debian and Free Software

Debian Day is part of DebConf, the international Debian Conference. After ten editions in nine different countries spanning four continents, and for the first time in the United States, the Debian project is holding their annual Debian Developer conference, DebConf, at Columbia University in New York City. Debian Day kicks off DebConf, is free of charge, and open for everybody interested in Free Software. During this event, there will be a full day of talks on several subjects such as free software in government, design and free software, free software advocacy as well as string of talks about the Debian project and operating system.

The Debian Project is an association of individuals who have made common cause to create a free and open operating system. This operating system that we have been creating is called Debian GNU/Linux, or simply Debian for short. Every year, DebConf allows new and existing Debian project participants from around the world to assemble, share knowledge and ideas, make collaborative contributions to Debian, build tighter community bonds and improve communication within the project.

We would love to see you join us at Debian Day. Registration is required but is free.

… and after one small step, two men would stare out across what one of them called “magnificent desolation”. Orbiting overhead another man would keep vigil, as on earth half of a billion people were riveted to television screens receiving broadcasts of events as they unfolded on what had been until that moment a dreamscape. Kings, Tyrants, and Leaders relegated to awestruck spectators. We were there all of us explorers, and to us that grand frontier that has sat elusive in our night sky, forever a source of inspiration and hope, was finally so very close to us. We dared to dream, and we dared to make that dream real.

I hope that I will some day look on as mankind takes it’s first steps onto a planet that is not our own. That would be the greatest.

Some would say it was Engineers, and Scientists that got us to the moon. That’s no more true than saying it was America or John F Kennedy who got us there. So many people have given of themselves down through the centuries, some giving everything. Apollo was everyone’s. This anniversary belongs to all of us. So, enjoy the wonder, the excitement, and the pride all over again. Enjoy it while it lasts, because some day soon we’ll be sitting glued to televisions and lcds as men and women of earth step out onto the vastness of Mars.

Travis Goodspeed and others designed a very, very sweet little MSP430-based badge for this year’s HOPE. It allows the OpenAMD project to keep track of where you are and what you’re doing by broadcasting a unique ID. However, we’ve discovered that there are some people, like Travis himself, who aren’t nearly as ubiquitous as they should be. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could help out by being Travis, too? Well, now you can! Opendopple is a cute little modification to the stock firmware that allows you to clone others. Just trigger the rightmost general I/O pin, and it will clone the ID and sequence number of the next packet it can find. Resetting your badge will restore your original ID.

We are reviving the New York City Patching Circle and making it a monthly thing! Every third Sunday of the month, we’ll be meeting at NYC Resistor. Last month we worked on Gem and laid plans for an object based on Mac OS X’s IOSurface to allow different programs like Pd/Gem, Quartz Composer, etc. to share textures in the GPU.

We spend enough time alone staring at our computers; we are proposing to work together. So often issues that arise when working can be solved with a quick two minute discussion that would take hours to solve alone. We have Dorkbot to see people’s work, we have Share where anyone can play, we have workshops and universities to learn from. This is a meeting where we all can come to work.

This is an informal gathering of patching and patchers (Pd, Max/MSP/Jitter, and even vvvv, Eyesweb, Labview, etc.). Beginners and Experienced welcome. Open to everyone, students, the public, etc. Work on school projects, personal projects, ask for help, help others, or just patch quietly to yourself, in a room full of other people patching patches and helping other people patch.

Come to Resistor on Saturday to learn about Ableton Live, one of the most versatile DAWs for composition, production and live performance. The class will provide you with all the knowledge necessary to start making music with Ableton Live.

We’ll go over the interface, MIDI and Ableton’s native synths, recording live audio, sampling, optimizing CPU performance, tempo manipulation, using Ableton’s effects and AU/VST plug-ins, and more. We’ll also discuss basics of sound design, and useful methods for arranging and performing music in Ableton. Finally, we’ll discuss ways to sync Live with external programs. We’ll make our own tracks, jam, and discuss different approaches to composition, production and live performance.

am kommenden Dienstag, (13.07.2010) findet im Labor ein Vortrag über klassische Betriebssysteme statt. Beginn ist um 19:00 Uhr im Labor in der Alleestr. 50 in Bochum.

Thema:

Jede Woche werden neue Funktionen von Betriebssystemen angekündigt, die einem das Arbeiten mit dem Computer einfacher machen. Was Vielen nicht bewusst ist: die meisten dieser Neuerungen haben nichts mit dem Betriebssystemen als solchem zu tun. Stimmt nicht? Was ist denn ein Betriebssystem genau? Was haben alle Betriebssysteme gemeinsam? Und: Wer hat’s erfunden?

Inhalt:

In diesem kurzen Vortrag soll versucht werden, einen Einblick in die
Entwicklungsgeschichte der Betriebssysteme zu geben. Betriebssysteme
wurden seit mehr als einem halben Jahrhundert immer weiter entwickelt,
wobei einige Systeme als besonders innovativ oder wichtig in Erinnerung
bleiben. Anhand dieses Systeme soll gezeigt werden, wie Betriebssysteme
unsere Arbeit mit Computern erleichtern oder erst wirklich möglich
machen, welche Techniken sich bis heute gehalten haben und wie die
Arbeit mit den ersten großen Rechnern vonstatten ging. Dabei wird sich
zum Beispiel auch klären, welche der neuen Funktionen moderner
Betriebssysteme wirklich Betriebssystemfunktionen sind und welche nicht.

Jon Santiago is co-founder and co-director of STEM2GETHER, an educational services cooperative that helps schools and community based organizations create hands-on enrichment programs that promote knowledge in Science, Technology, Engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Previously Jon has worked with Sustainable South Bronx, where he launched a FabLab in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is co-creator of the NSF supported GreenFab program, which introduces students to design and engineering in the context of environmental sustainability. Jon has an SB in Mathematics from MIT where he worked with the FabLab program, a global initiative to bring digital fabrication laboratories to communities around the world. He is also a member of NYC Resistor, a Hacker Space in Downtown Brooklyn where people meet regularly to share tech knowledge and build community.

Das allmonatliche HNB steht wieder an, diesmal in tropischer Hitze gegen die wir nur eiskalte
Mate als Verteidigung haben. Zu späterer Stunde ist eine kleine Zockrunde angedacht, wer also
noch eine Konsole mit spielen mitbringen will und Lust hat ab 2 Uhr morgens den Abend
gesellig wegzudaddeln fühle sich hiermit eingeladen

Des weiteren steht auch wieder etwas im Vortragsprogramm (weitere Lightning Talks sind
natürlich auch wieder willkommen)

Gegen 20 Uhr wird blueling einen Vortrag mit dem Titel “Rx – Reactive Extensions for .NET (Linq to Events)” (inklusive einer kleinen Einführung in C#) halten.

Also: Notebooks geschultert, Compiler und Lötkolben vorheizen, es wird wieder amtlich abgenerdet!

NYC resistor: Slot Car Hacking at Buzz-A-Rama

What better way to spend a hot, humid Sunday Brooklyn afternoon than checking out Buzz-A-Rama, a 1960’s era slot car parlor in Kensington? Inside this unassuming storefront are 4 or 5 large twisting tracks, where children and adults race cars about 3 inches wide by 6 inches long, much larger than the matchbox-sized slot cars I played with as a kid. Amateurs like us use slow cars rented from Buzz. The pros, however, bring their own custom lightning-fast cars and controllers, and they are quite serious about them.

The car chassis are cut from lightweight aluminum composite using electrical discharge machining. Motivation is provided by high-performance brushless DC motors. Wheels and tires are made of special sticky, heat-resistant rubber, with a set of chemicals and rituals for cleaning and warm-up before a big race.

The lightweight plastic body can be either an aerodynamic wedge shape that directs airflow up, forcing the rear wheels down for better traction, or a more traditional scale model of a production muscle car. Super-cool retro body styles are available as well.

The controllers are also semi-custom built, and are adjustable by the operator to conform to his or her desired level of aggression in acceleration and braking.

You can buy the cars as ready-to-run products, but many racers customize theirs and/or build their own from the ground up, choosing the best components, and tweaking them for the best performance. The cars we saw were mostly made with components from Koford Engineering, and the controllers were from DiFalco Design, although apparently there are other companies serving this market as well. The fastest ultra-light cars we saw cost as much as $500.

Buzz has a good stock of generic aluminum and brass bar stock, motors, electrodes, dremel bits, lubricant, etc., behind the counter, so this could be a handy resource for local hobbyists and hackers building other electro-mechanical gadgets as well.

Buzz-a-rama is only open on weekends, and it is closed for two months in the summer starting tomorrow, but if you get a chance, stop by and check it out. It’s worth the trip:

am kommenden Mittwoch (16.06.2010) findet im Labor ein Vortrag über das Modellieren von 3D-Objekten in Blender statt. Beginn ist um 19:00Uhr im Labor in der Alleestr. 50 in Bochum.

Der Vortrag dient als Basis für die kommenden 3 Workshops. Der erste Workshop wird eine Woche später, am Mittwoche den 23.06.2010 um 19:00 Uhr im Labor stattfinden.

Inhalt:

In dem Vortag wird zuerst das Erstellen, Bearbeiten, Zusammenführen undTrennen von Objekten erklärt. Danach wird auf das vorher erstellte Objekt eine Textur gelegt. Als nächstes werden wir eine Bewegung in das Objekt bringen und dieses ausleuchten und eine Kammerfahrt erstellen. Als letztes wird erklärt, worauf beim Rendern der Animationen zu achten ist.

Ziel:

Ziel des Vortrages ist es, dass die Teilnehmer einfache Objekte erstellen und bewegen können.

Labor Blog: Vortrag: IPv6 (Teil 1/2)

Liebe Techikenthusiasten und Netzwerkfans,

am kommenden Samstag (05.06.2010) findet im Labor ein Vortrag über IPv6 und die eingesetzten Techinken statt. Beginn ist um 19:00 Uhr im Labor in der Alleestr. 50 in Bochum.

Der Vortrag setzt sich aus zwei Teilen zusammen. Der zweite Teil wird zwei Wochen später am Freitag, den 25.06.2010 um 19:00 Uhr im Labor stattfinden.

Thema:

Die Vorträge sollen einen umfassenden Überblick über das Internet Protokoll der Version 6 geben. Dabei werden Vorteile, Aufwand, Programme und Begriffe erklärt werden. Da dies nicht ohne Vorkenntnisse möglich ist, werden auch Netzstrukturen angesprochen und “das richtige Internet” kurz erklärt.

Inhalt:

1. Halbzeit:

Es findet einführend eine kurze Beschreibung statt, welche Technik warum verwendet werden, um das Internet am Laufen zu halten. Dabei wird auf das Weiterleiten von Datenpaketen eingegangen und es wird kurz beschrieben, wie die diversen Internet Service Provider (ISPs) zusammenhängen.

2. Halbzeit:

Anhand des Vergleiches von IPv4 und IPv6 sollen Vorteile und Neuerungen von IPv6 herausstellt werden und auf einige sinnvolle – aber meist nicht erkannte – Techniken hingewiesen werden, unter die zum Beispiel die Privacy Extension, als auch IPSec fallen.

Vorwissen zu IPv4 voteilhalft aber nicht unbedingt notwendig

Labor Blog: Workshop: Repair your devices

am kommenden Samstag (29.05.2010) findet im Labor ein Workshop über die Reparatur von Elektrogeräten statt. Beginn ist um 11:00 Uhr im Labor in der Alleestr. 50 in Bochum.

Thema:

Immer wieder gehen irgendwelche Geräte einfach kaputt: Der DVD-Player tut keinen Mucks mehr, der DSL-Router pfeift nur noch oder der Fernseher zeigt kein Bild mehr.

Reperatur lohnt heutzutage nicht mehr, da zu teuer?
Aber moment mal:

Was wenn man das defekte Gerät einfach selber reparieren würde? Dann könnte man potentiell ein nützliches Device wieder zur Funktion überreden und außerdem auch jede Menge über angewandte Elektronik lernen. Die meisten Fehler sind, einmal erkannt, ohne teure Spezialteile sofort zu beheben.

Inhalt:

Es wird diesen Samstag allen Leuten assistiert, die ihre defekten Geräte zur Reperatur ins Labor bringen. Wir werden zu den Fehlern, die wir wahrscheinlich antreffen werden, was erzählen und wir werden versuchen, möglichst viele von den Geräten zu neuem Leben zu erwecken.

Vorkenntnisse:

Eigentlich keine – wobei einen Schraubendreher solltet ihr benutzen können, und auch wissen, welche Seite des Lötkolbens heiß wird…..
Sinnvolle Vorarbeit: Versucht ein Service-Manual/Schaltplan zu eurem Gerät aus dem Internet aufzutreiben – die findet man schonmal, sind aber nicht unbedingt erforderlich. Ein weiteres Gerät ähnlicher Gattung zum Ausschlachten für Teile währe auch nicht verkehrt, wir haben zwar eine Menge Teile im Labor, aber Schlachtgeräte können sicherlich nicht schaden.

Warpzone: Erstes Freifunk-Treffen in der Warpzone

Die Freifunker in Münster und der Warpzone e.V. laden heute Abend, im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes, zu einem ersten Vernetzungstreffen in die Räume der Warpzone ein.

“Es geht darum ein von Bürgern betriebenes, offenes und stadtweites Wireless-Netzwerk in Münster aufzubauen. Heute Abend soll erstmal über die Idee hinter Freifunk[1] informieren, sowie die nächsten Schritte geplant werden.” so Markus Barenhoff vom Freifunk Squad der Piratenpartei in Münster.

Zu dem Treffen am Donnerstag Abend ab 19.00 in der Warpzone (Künstlerhaus A am Hawerkamp, Anfahrt siehe [2] ) ist jeder herzlich eingeladen sich zu informieren und aktiv einzubringen.

Heyo.

Can b tis tiem again?</lolcat> Am Samstag ist es wieder soweit! Zum 7.
mal findet das Hack’N'Breakfast in der warpzone statt.

Diesmal wird es unter anderem einen ausgedehnten Vortrag über die funktionale und objektorientierte
Programmiersprache “Scala” geben und es ist auch herzlich zum nächtlichen “Hands-on-Scala” eingeladen
(für alle die nicht nur darüber etwas erfahren wollen, sondern sich auch austauschen und gleich
experimentieren wollen). Das ganze ist kein fester Teil der Veranstaltung sondern eine Anregung

Des weiteren hoffen wir wieder auf spannende Konversationen, Projekte und vielleicht auch den
ein oder anderen Lightning Talk mit euch.

Wie immer öffnen wir die Türen um 18Uhr und bleiben bis zum frühen morgen.

Also! Bringt euch ein, denn Wissen wird erst schön wenn man es teilen kann
